Achieved Learning Outcomes and Alumni Community
Subchapter 5.3A
Alumni Community & Events

Milestones Completed

An important part of HTH strategy is the relationship with the industry and our alumni. We have a long tradition of close collaboration with our alumni and industry partners in international hospitality industry and other service sectors where hospitality makes a difference.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

With a rich history of over 95 years, our alumni community is extensive, with approximately 12,000 active members worldwide. We engage our alumni through various activities, including:

  • Alumni Events (Educational sessions and speakers)

  • Guest Speakers

  • Involvement in Course Development

  • Industry Advisory Board (Regular and Next Generation).

  • Graduation speeches

  • Recruitment and Coaching Support

  • Selection Assessment

  • Sustainable Hospitality Challenge

  • Partnerships & Sponsorships

  • Extra Mile Extracurricular Events

The primary tool for alumni engagement is our online Alumni Platform, launched in 2019, currently has over 7,000 registered alumni. Alike LinkedIn, the Platform allows alumni to connect with HTH and each other across the globe and based on location or field of expertise thus fostering a sense of community. Aside from the initial goal of the platform (community building through Chapters), the system also facilitates other activities such as newsfeeds, article publications, event announcements, webinars, and lifelong learning. The alumni platform is introduced to students in LYCar (graduation course), so the students can get placement/research opportunities, discuss with experts in the field and later share their knowledge (dissemination).

Alumni Chapters and Events

Alumni Relations actively supports over 25 Alumni Chapters worldwide. These chapters are independent entities led by alumni who voluntarily engage in specific geographical areas and host activities such as networking events, educational components, field trips, conference discounts, and recruitment support. Chapters fundraise or seek sponsorships to execute these events. Many alumni events are organised in conjunction with large global conferences related to the hospitality industry where industry professionals are invited next to our alumni.

Sustainable Hospitality Challenge

We have successfully organised the Sustainable Hospitality Challenge that has expanded over the last years to become the largest Student Challenge in the world in the field of Hospitality. In the edition of 2022/2023 a record number of 47 of the top-tier hospitality institutions participated from around the world. To reach higher levels of deliverables and solutions that are ‘ready to market’, we also welcomed leading international architecture, technology and design universities to the competition. Among many a few were: Hong Kong Polytechnic, Milano Politecnico, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, Southern Californian Institute of Design. This edition held its semifinals in Amsterdam which hosted many high-level Industry leaders as jury members. The finals were held in Abu Dhabi in September 2023, where we had the pleasure to welcome 9 jury members at COO and CEO level. The award ceremony was done on a Global Main Stage in collaboration with William Heinecke (CEO Minor) as well as supporting videos from the CEOs of Marriott (Anthony Capuano), Accor (Sebastien Bazin) and Wyndham (Geoffrey Ballotti). The event was a highlight during the Future Hospitality Summit for many and put Hotelschool the Hague top-of-mind among many high-level industry leaders.

The winning team was invited to present on the main stage of the WTTC (World Travel and Tourism Council) in Rwanda in November 2o23. This summit was visited by many governmental leaders and CEOs of large Fortune 500 companies (Google, Emirates, TUI, Accor etc.). The summit also hosted over 200 press agencies from around the world, including CNN and BBC.

Future Aspirations

We aim to further strengthen the relationship between Hotelschool The Hague and alumni. We will extend the Alumni Platform to bolster continuing education opportunities through training and consultancy type of activities. HTH has engaged in exploring new modes of education through lifelong learning models (e.g. Micro-credentials) that will incentivise alumni to return and reskill whenever needed.

The Sustainable Hospitality Challenge has recently closed another partnership with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). The focus will be ‘ready to market’ concrete products that brands and/or investors can invest into. There is an exploration of an incubator attached to and/or related to the Challenge. Instead of one Semifinals event, the 2023/2024 edition will host 3 Semifinal events around the world in collaboration with Florida International University (FIU), Dusit Thani (Bangkok) and SHMS (Swiss Hotel Management School) in Montreux.
