Milestones Completed
Tutoring at HTH plays a crucial role in supporting students' study and life skills development throughout the comprehensive four-year programme.
The evolution of tutoring, initiated in 2017 with the adoption of the "On Course" approach, inspired by Skip Downing's publication, has become the cornerstone of the curriculum enhancement journey. This integrated approach underscores vital principles such as personal responsibility, self-motivation, independence, emotional intelligence, and lifelong learning; it aligns perfectly with our commitment to fostering well-rounded, successful students.
Continuously refined based on student feedback, a specialised tutoring programme ensuring personalised guidance and tailored support is currently spanning all four academic years:
Year 1 focusses on topics such as study skills, time management, decision making, interdependence, emotional intelligence, and self-awareness. The Birkman Personality Test has been incorporated to better align with practical education for maximum effectiveness of team collaboration.
Year 2 emphasises the themes of motivation, networking and orientation towards the hospitality industry.
Year 3 is geared towards making informed decisions on internship possibilities and fostering the skills in the quotients of IQ, EQ and AQ.
Year 4 students receive academic guidance from expert coaches in the field of their research and keep on-demand contact with their tutors during the second (management) placement.
The tutors actively engage students in diverse workshops, tutorials and one-on-one meetings. The aim is to ensure that every student, including the less engaged, feels heard, seen, and cared for in an environment conducive to learning. HTH achieves this aim through the Tutor Office, comprising a group of three lecturers, who serve as a valuable helpdesk for both tutors and students, offering support and guidance throughout their academic journey.

In 2021, Hotelschool The Hague introduced a revamped Professional Development (PD) tutoring programme, which incorporates the latest insights into study techniques, self-management, and interdependence. The launch of masterclasses in the PD programme has enabled a more engaging approach to practice theories of study and life skills as wells as to balance the workload of tutors. One-on-one tutor meetings remain a vital part of the support system, ensuring that each student receives personalised guidance. In addition, the establishment of a dedicated worksite on MyHotelschool LMS further supports the commitment to enhancing tutor guidance infrastructure for a more effective learning experience.
Hotelschool The Hague commits itself to enhancing student support and nurturing their wellbeing. The student counseling programme serves the dual purpose of providing confidential and comprehensive assistance to students on various matters such as legal issues, personal circumstances and cultural issues impeding study success, and mental wellbeing.
The student counselor team at Hotelschool The Hague has achieved many milestones in enhancing student support. They have ensured accessibility and visibility by stationing a counselor at each campus and actively promoting their role through news articles, intranet updates, presentations during EduConnect Day. Moreover, the team aims to proactively reach out to new students, offering specialised care and support throughout their academic journey, emphasising early intervention and a holistic approach to student wellbeing.
This team of counselors has delivered timely assistance to students on a wide array of matters, maintaining the confidentiality of student information and creating a strong network with counselors from other institutions and engaging in professional development about pressing topics that (in)directly influence the student’s progress. Continuous improvement initiatives, for instance creating a department handbook with standard operating procedures optimised service delivery to students, and advisory to various departments. In addition, the introduction of a questionnaire tool to assess department performance and exit interviews have further enhanced counselors’ ability to reach and support students more effectively.
Next to tutors and student counselors, the BA.HM students may contact study progress coordinators who, in the case of a deviation in study progress, provide specific information about alternative courses, assessments, resits, study planning and exemptions. Also, confidential advisers are available to offer support in case of a report of undesirable behaviour; and a Service Desk, a front-office department, is the first point of contact for students, parents, staff and external parties.

A joint responsibility of the tutors and study progress coordinators is to monitor the dropout rate in the first year. A closer follow-up over the past years has resulted in measures being introduced when the dropout rate increased above the 10% target (in 2017). The tutors introduced workshops on time management and accountability, and the selection procedure was adapted. The requirement to discontinue the programme (RDP) has been around 51 ECs over the past five years, and the monitoring of student progress was intensified. The results were analysed immediately after each block, and any student who was shown not to be keeping up was actively invited to attend extra study progress meetings. These actions have led to a decrease in dropout after the first year as shown in the table above.
Furthermore, Hotelschool The Hague feels it has a responsibility to support the students in the school system and rules and procedures in force that have been worked out in detail in the Student Charter and Education and Examination Regulation (EER). Students are referred to myhotelschool.nl environment to retrieve information about schedules, course syllabi, assessment, study load, and to HTH intranet for general information and updates.

The programme looks to enhance tutors’ role with ongoing development efforts to expand content for Year 2, which include more specialised training sessions and further development of the tutor support infrastructure to ensure students receive the assistance they need to thrive in their academic journey.
The student counselor team envisions even greater accomplishments moving forward. Their initiative-taking goal is to provide early care and support to new students right from the moment of acceptance forging a path to success in their academic pursuits.
