With the special feature Small-scale and Intensive Education, and as agreed in the national Professional and Educational Profile (PEP), it is permitted to select applicants for the BA in Hospitality Management. The process is built upon Programme Learning Outcomes to enrol the most suitable candidates for our small-scale education and intensive educational concept.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

To set HTH apart from the competition, a holistic approach is employed, emphasising the interplay of IQ (Intelligence Quotient), EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), and AQ (Adversity Quotient). While IQ reflects knowledge and cognitive skills, industry has emphasised the pivotal role that EQ and AQ play within the context of the hospitality industry. Incoming students are evaluated on a combination of knowledge and skills and their intrinsic affinity with the world of hospitality.
Applicants to the BA.HM first need to meet standard admissions requirements regarding prior education before being invited to take part in a Selection Day. During the Selection Day, applicants’ level of English (at least level B2 on the Common European Framework of Modern Foreign Languages), essay writing, comprehension and numerical skills are assessed. The invited candidates take part in a personal interview with two assessors and prepare a pitch which aims to assess their suitability for the programme. The assessment rubric has been developed to evaluate candidates on the following criteria during the interview:
1. Pitch & Closing Statement
2. Motivation for HTH & Intercultural Setting
3. Motivation for the Industry
4. Self-awareness & Self-management
The tests are examined on the HTH learning management platform Sakai. Results can be retrieved directly from https://admissions.hotelschool.nl/ through the Gradebook. Hotelschool The Hague also offers online selection moments for applicants who are living abroad for both September and February intakes.

With the curriculum renewal of the BA.HM, the selection process was further enhanced to meet the educational objectives of our intensive and interculturally oriented hospitality management programme. The knowledge test now includes application-based questions and presents candidates with three answer options, increasing its complexity. The numerical test has become more demanding, incorporating additional mixed fractions calculations to assess mathematical proficiency. The interview component features an expanded set of questions aimed at evaluating both the emotional intelligence and adversity quotient of each candidate thus providing deeper insights into their interpersonal and resilience capabilities. The process aims to admit students who are not only academically talented but also exhibit the adaptability and enthusiasm essential for thriving in our small-scale, intensive educational concept including industry related and extracurricular activities. Overall, these measures ensure that candidates are evaluated on a broader range of skills and qualities relevant to their success, making the selection process an immersive experience that reflects our programme's dedicated commitment to preparing students for the ever-evolving landscape of intercultural hospitality management. Group of Selectors
The Selection Committee comprises a diverse panel of selectors, including alumni, staff, and current students. Prior to assuming their roles as selectors, all committee members undergo comprehensive training aimed at reducing biases and fostering awareness of their own inherent biases. This rigorous training is essential to enhance the overall validity and reliability of the selection process.
Upon joining the committee, new selectors are integrated into a structured training cycle, featuring multiple (benchmarking) sessions scheduled at varying times and dates across both campuses. This comprehensive training regimen includes a 45-minute session dedicated to familiarising selectors with the updated selection procedure. During this training, selectors are also equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively utilise the HTH selection system and apply the revised grading rubric. Importantly, this training is conducted on the same day as the selection procedure, ensuring that all selectors are well-prepared and aligned with the latest protocols.

Results Selection Cycle 2022 & 2023
After the global pandemic the total number of applications has seen significant growth, with 14% growth among Dutch applicants and 28% increase among international applicants compared to the previous year. In 2023, the total number of completed applications reached 1,376. Excluding the selection process, there was a notable 17% increase in the number of completed applications. However, when including the selection process, the overall increase in completed applications was a more modest 5%. There were a total of 17 Selection Days, with 4 held abroad, 3 conducted online, and 10 taking place on campus. For all the candidates who have participated in a Selection Day, the overall acceptance rate stands at 37%. In other words, roughly 1 in 3 applicants is accepted into the BA programme. The 2023/2024 intake has resulted in 513 students (38 for IFT) admitted to the BA. HM programme.
The intake assessments and interviews have proven to positively affect the communication of our academic and professional orientation. The process provides a realistic picture of study feasibility among applicants and their expectations, and this has been confirmed by the results of the National Student Satisfaction Survey (NSE).

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education
For the upcoming selection cycle, HTH is implementing several enhancements to the assessment components to ensure a more comprehensive evaluation of applicants' capabilities. For instance, there is a plan to transition to an online situational judgment assessment, leveraging technology to assess candidates' analysis and decision-making abilities in various situations.
To further improve the selection process, there will be a focus on utilising data to gain insight into students' performance. Selection results will be compared to the performance of selected students once they are enrolled, with a particular focus on study success. This ongoing analysis aims to enhance the effectiveness of the selection process and ensure alignment with the curriculum's requirements. Collaboration with the Study Success Team is integral to validate and refine the selection criteria, ensuring they accurately predict student success in our dynamic educational environment.
Additionally, in response to complex governmental restrictions on international students studying in the Netherlands, supplementary online sessions tailored for international students have been organised. These sessions offer insight and support for success during the Selection Day and will continue to be offered. The intention is to further streamline the process and provide international students with a more convenient means of participation, taking travel considerations into account. These future aspirations are geared towards ensuring that HTH selects applicants who are best equipped to excel in a small-scale intensive educational environment and thrive in future industry employment.
