Subchapter 1.3A
The Extra Mile Office

Milestones Completed

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

The Extra Mile Office started rolling out in 2017 and is currently led by the Project Lead and two Y3 Student Assistants who aspire to fulfill the mission:

‘’To support students and faculty members to organise student-driven extracurricular activities that broaden or deepen the hospitality related knowledge and skills of as many students within Hotelschool as possible.’’

In addition, to address the post COVID needs of students, the Extra Mile Office diversified its engagement by including wellbeing/athletic initiatives. The Extra Mile Office is a learning hub that supports and supervises various extracurricular activities within Hotelschool The Hague. All Extra Mile procedures are written down in the Extra Mile Activity Handbook. Students can take the initiative to start an activity themselves. Currently there are 10 active student initiatives registered under the umbrella of the Extra Mile Office. Please see the overview of the Extra Mile Clubs.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

All Extra Mile Activities are required to adhere to three basic principles:

  • They should be student-driven. The student should be in the driver’s seat and takes the lead in organising the Activity.

  • The Activity should be open to a significant part of the HTH community. As many students as possible should be able to join.

  • The Activity actively contributes to broadening or deepening the hospitality related BoKS of students.

The following can currently be said regarding Extra Mile Milestones:

  • 100% of HTH students and staff are aware of at least one Extra Mile extracurricular Activity.

  • 60% of HTH students and 90% of staff are aware of the existence and purpose of the Extra Mile Office.

  • 33% of HTH students have participated at least once in an event of an Extra Mile Activity.

We aim to link all Extra Mile activities to either students' professional or personal development and ensure that the activities are also linked to our lecturers and staff where possible.

The Extra Mile Office issues certificates. These certificates are either for Participants or Board Members (Certificates of Recognition) or for Chairs (Leadership Certificates). Almost 100 Extra Mile Certificates were issued in 2022. Biannually, a Certificate Ceremony is organised to award students their certificate.

When looking at the National Student Survey for 2023, we see that students are very satisfied with the extracurricular activities that HTH offers.

The Extra Mile Office’s future focus will be on supporting and growing current activities, preferably also expanding current activities on both campuses. Content wise, the Extra Mile initiative is set to expand in the area of expert trainings with professional certification such as wine and first aid courses. Additionally, long-term innovative ideas such as more cohesion between Chairs (workshops, Get Togethers) and involvement of Student Associations will be utilised.
