Milestones Completed
Upon resuming exchange activities after the pandemic, by November 2022, we set up collaborations with four partner universities and agreed on the rigorous selection of courses approved by the HTH Assessment Committee that would be of added value for our students.
HTH has established several criteria for the content of exchange programme courses positioned in Year 4, in the Minor block. Such courses should:
allow students to deepen or broaden their knowledge
have similar learning objectives/outcomes to the HTH Minor courses
do not have an overlap with the BA.HM courses in Year 1, 2 and 3
provide content on the level of HTH Year 4.
The learning objectives of the suite of courses a student can follow at a partner institution are checked by both an educational specialist and the Assessment Committee. A final check is carried out by the Exam Committee who grants the ECs once a student returns and has successfully completed the courses of their study exchange.
HTH students on exchange
At present, we have been sending HTH students on exchange to the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom (Hong Kong); Institut Lyfe (formerly known as Paul Bocuse), Ecully, Lyon (France); Emirates Academy, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) and EUHT Sant Pol, Girona (Spain).
Students going abroad during the first semester of Year 4 have two options when it comes to the duration of their exchange programme: 15 European Credits replacing the Minor element of the curriculum (one 10-week block) or 30 study credits (one semester) replacing the Minor and LYCar Proposal course. To study abroad for 30 EC, students are to follow a research course as part of their exchange programme.
As incoming exchange students, we also welcome students from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki (Finland) and National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT), Taiwan (R.O.C.).
Since 2019, conversations have started with multiple stakeholders on our vision of internationalisation and on expanding our partnerships (for details, see HTH University Partners overview). Currently we are looking into further expanding the partnerships (with one per semester) with institutions that meet the following criteria:
to be complementary to HTH and strongly internationally and interculturally focused
to have top level of reputation and quality of education (e.g. in top 10 QS World Universities rankings, member of HSD (Hotel Schools of Distinction) and/or THE ICE (The International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education) partners
to operate in line with the vision and values of HTH, hospitality, ethical and SDGs practice.
Future Aspirations
We would rather increase the number of educational partners slowly making a conscious choice for each partner programme than try to expand quickly in larger numbers. For now, we aim to increase the number of partners within the Erasmus + network.
It is a challenge to offer an exchange programme in Year 4 as many other universities often offer an exchange in Year 2 or 3 or have a lower level of programme learning outcomes than the ones of HTH Minor. However, Year 4 is the most flexible part of our curriculum as students have already achieved (most of) their PLOs by the end of Year 3. Hence, this is the perfect opportunity to allow students to diversify or specialise. Our goal for the future is to further explore how to best position the exchange programme within the Bachelor.
