Subchapter 1.2B
Premaster Programme

Milestones Completed

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

Since 2019 HTH has been offering the Premaster Programme as one of several graduation tracks within LYCar trajectory and assessment criteria in Year 4. This programme allows HTH graduates to be directly eligible for many national MSc programmes in Business Management at the HTH partner universities such as University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Business School), Erasmus University (Rotterdam School of Management) and Nyenrode University.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

The current programme allows students to differentiate in line with their academic ambitions. The programme encompasses a total of 75 ECs obtained by completing eight academic and design-oriented research related courses of 45 ECs and a LYCar industry experience project of 30 ECs. Students need to attain all 75 ECs within 1 year in order to receive the premaster certificate. The development of the Premaster programme has been a successful educational initiative confirmed by a growing number of applications, from 17 in 2019 to around 70 in 2023.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

After a successful pilot with the Amsterdam Business School (UvA) in 2019, from 2020 onwards the programme is offered twice a year. Almost 80% of our premaster graduates have already commenced a MSc and almost 80 % obtain their postgraduate degree within one year. Most students have followed a MSc programme at our partner Universities, with 12 students starting a Master programme elsewhere. The most popular MSc is the Finance & Investments programme followed by programmes in Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Strategic Management. The graduates who have already obtained their MSc are often working as consultants, business analysts or account managers. The remaining 20% graduates who had not started an MSc yet, decided to first advance their professional career by working for a company or starting their own business.

Andrade Trifan, cohort Sept 2021, MSc completed in Management of Innovation at Erasmus University Rotterdam:

“Following the pre-master track has been one of the greatest decisions throughout my HTH journey. I have greatly enjoyed the professionalism, the courses, set up, the challenges and the teachers I will cherish these moments and recommend the programme to ambitious HTH students.”

Hannah Hendrix, cohort Feb 2022, started MSc Entrepreneurship and Innovation at University of Amsterdam:

“The premaster programme at Hotelschool The Hague paved the way for my Entrepreneurship and Innovation Master at UvA. It refined my academic skills, making diving into research articles a breeze. I also loved the topics which are relevant for my current Master such as AI, innovations and leadership. The workload was a fitting preparation for the challenges ahead, and the experienced professors were helpful in my growth.”

Keshav Mukherjee, cohort Feb 2022, started MSc Management at Erasmus University Rotterdam:

“The Pre Master program in HTH has a curated approach which balances the transition between HBO and a higher master’s education seamlessly. The course educates the students in applying themselves theoretically and elevates the capacity of students to comprehend.  Lastly, at the heart of the course is the relationship the students are encouraged to have with the teachers. It truly is a collaborative experience inside and outside the classroom.”

Andrada Radu, cohort Sept 2022, started MSc Strategy at University of Amsterdam:

“Being a part of the pre-master's program at HTH has been an enriching and rewarding experience, one that has equipped me with invaluable skills and knowledge that continue to benefit me in my academic and professional journey. One of the standout features of the pre-master's program at HTH was its exceptional ability to bridge the gap between theoretical models and real-life cases and scenarios. The program did not just teach us abstract concepts; it showed us how to directly apply that knowledge in our day-to-day lives. This practical approach was a refreshing departure from the purely theoretical learning often associated with academic programs….”

Future Aspirations

In the upcoming years we aim to consolidate our current three partnerships, seeing the preference of our students, the ranking of these MSc programmes and the resources it takes to create and sustain them.

This academic year we will further explore how to better support premaster students with a preference for a Master programme not connected to our partner universities, seeing some of our premaster graduates are already accepted, without the involvement of HTH, for MSc programmes at other (international) universities, such as the VU, Lund and Bayes Business School. Potentially this can be achieved by establishing informal cooperation alliances with interesting (international) university partners. In this light, initial conversations with WUR (Wageningen University) show that without the need for a formal partnership, our premaster students in most situations will not need additional premaster qualifications to access their management and marketing related MSc programmes. Since the commencement of this programme, we have actively been monitoring the quality of the curriculum through both quantitative course evaluations and qualitative reports of student representatives, showing a challenging but inspiring programme with high student satisfaction levels. We have recently started to further improve our programme and the selection procedure, based on the experience of our Premaster Alumni at their MSc programmes. Initial qualitative results point to a challenging programme that takes place in a safe environment and offers a strong stepping stone to the Master programmes at our partner universities. A quantitative follow-up survey to all Premaster Alumni is planned in 2024.
