Milestones Completed
In August of 2020, three new minors of 12 EC each were offered in the curriculum of Year 4, namely the Future of Business, the Future of Food and the Future of Work. The themes for these minors were defined based on the research performed by the Curriculum Innovation Committee and upon the consultation with our industry partners. In 2021, a further new minor was introduced: the Future of Guest Experience (12EC). In 2022 one more minor the Future of Digitalisation (12EC), supported by expertise of our Lector of Technology Innovation, was added to the programme minor catalogue.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education
The structure of the minors has a standardised format for the offered themes. All students following the minors explore the landscape of their theme by following short internships (the Future of Work minor), going on field trips, and interacting with guests and industry partners. Students are also introduced to an external commissioner from their theme landscape. The commissioner briefs a nascent pressing issue that calls for a solution. Further, students individually design a viable and actionable (contribution to) business solution using methods of Design Oriented Research. In this way, our minors are a good example of the integration of theory and research.

Special Feature: Small-Scale and Intensive Education

In Year 4, student ownership of learning increases because the curriculum offers students a good degree of flexibility in shaping their individual learning trajectories and personal profiles of future hospitality leaders. We see that when students become actively engaged in their learning, they get a better understanding of their learning targets and professional orientation, and often take the minor themes further into their LYCar graduation projects. Doing so aligns with the focus on autonomy and learner agency in Year 4. The minors require students to think and study about the Future but also about the Future They Want and how they can contribute to shaping that future. Additionally, we make certain that assessment reflects real-life performances of complex skills, and students are able to identify their learning and developmental needs.

Moving forward, we have created four multidisciplinary events called the Future We Want, where all 230 students from the different minors are being brought together. Named from a United Nations initiative, it has been established as a means for our students to re-imagine a better future for themselves, society, and the planet. At the recent The Future We Want & Volunteering, 221 students volunteered over 8 activities. These activities included picking apples left for waste under the apple trees, spending time with the elderly in nursing homes and at the Zoo, undertaking gardening and repair work at nursing homes, and children's and therapy farms, city park rubbish clean ups, and as the final activity - selling self-baked rescued apple pies for donation to assist earthquake victims in Morocco. All these volunteer activities are linked to an SDG, and the SDG Office has financially supported these events making the learning activity possible.
